Whiteford, Taylor & Preston's Pro Bono Provider Guide

Commitment to pro bono service is a strong tradition at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, and attorneys carry out this commitment at all levels on a regular basis. The firm strongly encourages involvement in pro bono activities.

Whiteford, Taylor & Preston is recognized as a leader in pro bono service in Maryland. The firm received the 1999 Maryland Pro Bono Law Firm Award from the Maryland State Bar Association for work in the Homeless Persons Representation Project Adopt-a-Shelter Program. The firm has assisted three homeless shelters for women in the Baltimore area and provides monthly outreach services to residents at those shelters. The firm was the first one in Baltimore to commit to the program and about 30 Whiteford attorneys presently participate in the program. Many of the firm's attorneys hold or have held positions of significant responsibility in charitable, public service organization in their communities and professional organizations.

  • The Arc of Baltimore (formerly known as: The Baltimore Association for Retarded Citizens, and BARC), is one of the nation's largest agencies addressing the needs of people with mental retardation. The Bar Association of Baltimore City and the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education (CARE) have joined resources to provide legal services to Baltimore City residents age 60.
  • The Health Education Resource Organization (HERO), Inc. is a private, non-profit community-based organization located in Baltimore City. Formed in 1983, HERO offers education, resources, and services for all Marylanders affected by AIDS and HIV disease.
  • The Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP), a non-profit organization, provides legal services and systemic advocacy on behalf of the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.
  • The House of Ruth Maryland is one of the nation's leading domestic violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find the safety and security that so many of us take for granted.
  • The Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) is a private, non-profit organization staffed by attorneys and paralegals. MDLC is the Protection and Advocacy organization for Maryland. MDLC's mission is to ensure that people with disabilities are accorded the full rights and entitlements afforded to them by state and federal law. 
  • Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, created in 1981, is a non-profit organization through which over 2,500 attorneys have taken 15,000 pro bono cases for low-income clients throughout Maryland. Sandtown Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing organization here in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of West Baltimore with the purpose of rebuilding the vacant housing in Sandtown, increasing homeownership and improving the health of the community.
  • St. Ambrose Legal Services (SALS) is the legal department within St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center. SALS is staffed by full-time legal professionals and interacts widely with other pro bono attorneys and groups through Maryland, as well as federal, state, and local officials.
